Rich plant ecosystem

Chung Yuan Christian University was founded more than 60 years ago. The trees planted in the early days have now become shades. The large green lawns and the green trees that bloom with the seasons make the campus full of vitality. The campus has a rich plant ecological environment, which is the school's greatest asset and attracts birds, mammals, and insects to rest and stay. Under the guidance of the green ecological campus concept, with "ecological" considerations, combined with local ecology, a natural environment that blends with the earth is created. Today, the campus is not only a large area of natural park green space, but also an open leisure space. In addition to meeting the activities of urban residents and the learning needs of students, it preserves rich biological resources and provides an excellent place for natural observation.

School Tree Adoption Program

To preserve this rich plant ecology, we have proposed enriching the types and maintenance methods of campus landscape plants, adjusting and planting campus landscape plants year by year, and establishing a long-term maintenance system, hoping to help maintain a healthy growth environment for trees through adoption by all sectors.

Adoption Methods

There is no limit on the amount of donations for adoption. The donations are mainly used for the overall maintenance of campus trees. However, donors can also adopt designated trees for at least 5 years with a minimum of NT$10,000. There is no limit on the number of trees that can be adopted, and the adoption fees are divided into 4 levels according to the trunk diameter of the tree:
1. For babies with a chest diameter of 16-30 cm (inclusive), the five-year adoption fee is NT$10,000.
2. For chest diameter of 31-50 cm (inclusive), the five-year adoption fee is NT$30,000.
3. For chest diameter 51-80 cm (inclusive), the five-year adoption fee is NT$50,000.
4. For chest diameter of 81 cm or above (inclusive), the five-year adoption fee is NT$100,000.

Building Green Metrics for Sustainable Campus Development

Our university continues to build and promote sustainable campus green indicators and actively implement carbon reduction policies. We have counted and investigated the types, heights, and health conditions of trees over 5 cm on campus, and recorded them in full numbers and digital records. We also used the U.S. Forest Service's multi-source development software i-Tree Eco to calculate the benefits of campus trees. This is the first university in Taiwan to fully investigate the carbon sinks, air pollution removal, and health benefits of campus trees. In 2022, all the trees on campus were counted and investigated one by one, and digital maps were created using GPS positioning. There are a total of 2,165 trees of 124 species, including 62 species and 1,592 trees native to Taiwan. These trees can store about 1,000 tons of carbon, sequester 30 tons of carbon, produce 75 tons of oxygen, remove 900 kilograms of pollutants, and reduce surface runoff by 2,600 cubic meters, greatly reducing the risk of flooding.
