Last year was a year full of challenges. People’s lifestyle has changed significantly due to the impact posed by COVID-19 all over the world, thus causing the constant volatility in society and the economy. The natural calamity caused by extreme climate signifies the urgent need for environmental sustainability. A low birth rate has also urged universities to seriously ponder the sustainable governance mechanism.
    In order to deal with the internal and external environmental impacts, CYCU, based on the holistic educational philosophy, when moving forward toward highlight planning for “Teaching Excellence, First-Class Characteristics and Excellence and Sustainability” at its 70th anniversary, set forth in its 2020-2022 mid-term and long-term university affairs development plans for “Increasing in International Involvement and Globalization”, the development strategy for “practicing sustainability and building the governance model” to declare officially that it will practice the 17 indicators of the United Nations’ SDGs as the focus of CYCU's governance in the future.

  As a responsible university , CYCU adopts the development strategy of “practicing sustainability and building the governance model” to practice the indicators of the United Nations’ SDGs in connection with economy, society, and environment through CYCU’s fine-quality governance mechanism. For the past few years, CYCU has achieved the following remarkable results based on its holistic educational philosophy:
(I)   Economy
   On the premise that students’ learning effectiveness is ensured, CYCU has striven for multiple internship opportunities for students in the recent years, valued industry-academia collaboration, and facilitates enterprise innovation. In the recent three years, CYCU has directed a total of 45 U-Start projects and a total of 57 startups. CYCU’s overall performance has allowed it to win the major national industry-academia collaboration performance reward from the Chinese Institute of Engineers six consecutive times, and was also ranked in the Top 3 of “Business Incubators and Accelerators” in the Asia-Pacific zone in 2019.
(II)  Society

   In response to the Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Sprout Project, CYCU has made its best effort to strive for university social responsibility projects, and contracted at least three projects in the most recent three years, including the “A plan of retaining the endangered schools: re-thriving the industrial environment in Zhuo-Lan County”, “Connection With the Taoyuan Liangzhen Cultural Green Corridor”, and the “Taoyuan Dahai Community Cultural Creation Project”, all of which received high recognition from society. This year, CYCU also was honored as 1st place among the private universities participating in society awarded by the CommonWealth Magazine.
(III) Environment
    Since CYCU was founded, all presidents, former and current, have valued the practicing of “holistic education” by “creating scenarios” on campus. In the whole process of planning and constructing the campus, CYCU attended to “the harmony between heaven, people, things and me”, and respects “mother nature and the dignity of human nature”, therefore literally making it a green university. In recent years, in response to the green energy and energy-conservation trend, CYCU has heavily invested in improving toilets, lighting, water supply and temperature reduction, etc. each year. The “Innovation Pilot Center for Theory in Practice” completed in 2018 even received the “Diamond” green building mark. The “Vale of Springs” completed under the holistic education and sustainability philosophy is a site full of rich texture transformed from an existing space on campus, which particularly values the balance between people, water, land, and plants. Therefore, the “Vale of Springs” is not only a landmark artwork shared by teachers and students, but also a flood detention pond on campus. The campus landscape respecting nature and humanity won 1st place in the LILA international landscape awards, campus category. CYCU is the first Taiwanese campus team to win the award.
(IV) University Governance
    CYCU runs the school with a holistic educational purpose and believes that “Love” is the power leading education. In 2019, CYCU was honored by the Ministry of Education as an excellent university winning the “Friendly Campus Award” and “Life Education Characteristic School”, and won the “Friendly Campus Award” in 2009, 2014 and 2019, making it the first one to win three times. Further, thanks to the efforts from all teachers and students, CYCU’s enrollment rate has been in 1st place among public and private comprehensive universities throughout the nation for three consecutive years, and 1st place among private universities in the “Enterprises’ Most Favorite Universities” by the 1111 Job Bank for three consecutive years. As a result of CYCU’s performance, it has won the first prize for subsidy funding for the private university school affairs development award and the highest subsidy for private comprehensive universities under the “Higher Education Sprout Project” for seven consecutive years.
    CYCU issues a sustainability report officially to declare that the school affairs governance will start to pursue sustainability, and CYCU will achieve the Net Zero target in 2049 based on the report. In the future, CYCU will strengthen school management and implement sustainability practices in four aspects including economy, society, environment, and governance. Meanwhile, CYCU has disclosed the following four major topics as the bases for CYCU to practice sustainability:
(I)   Play an important role as a university dedicated to upgrading industrial innovation for   

       economic promotion;
(II)  Become a social responsibility benchmark university for social development;
(III) Build an environmentally sustainable green university for environmental protection;
(IV) As a model university optimize governance practices for university governance.
